PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated his counterparts in Singapore and Australia on their electoral victories yesterday, while expressing hopes of forging deeper bilateral ties and strengthening regional cooperation.

Anwar took to social media to extend his wishes to Lawrence Wong on leading the ruling People’s Action Party to a fresh mandate in Singapore.

Describing the relations between Malaysia and Singapore as “bound by geography and enduring ties of kith and kin”, he said the two nations were building “a habit of deep collaboration at all levels” – a foundation he deemed vital amid global economic and geopolitical shifts.

He pointed to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone as a shining example of what neighbouring countries can achieve through shared purpose and conviction.

“We look forward to deepening this special relationship in the years ahead,” Anwar said in a post on X this morning.

The PAP won 87 of the 97 seats in Singapore’s 19th general election, securing a strong majority under Wong’s leadership after he officially took over as prime minister last year.

In a separate post last night, Anwar congratulated Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese on securing a second consecutive term – the first Australian leader to do so in 21 years.

He praised the swift and decisive nature of the Australian election results, saying it reflected a “clear and confident verdict from the Australian people”.

Anwar also acknowledged Australia’s growing attention to Southeast Asia during Albanese’s first term, saying he hoped that momentum would continue.

“As our region faces new tests and transformations, we look forward to working together to uphold stability, enhance resilience, and shape a future of shared prosperity,” he said in his post on X.
