SHAH ALAM:
The federal government will allocate RM40 million to repair the homes affected by the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion.

Repairs will start this week and are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Homes within a 100m radius of the incident site will be repaired first, with all reconstruction work expected to be completed in two years.

During a press conference here, housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming said the ceiling cost for repairing homes in need of full reconstruction was set at RM300,000 per unit.

The ceiling cost to repair homes with damage exceeding 40% but do not require full reconstruction is RM150,000, while for homes that are less than 40% damaged it is RM30,000.

He also said the government had allocated RM6 million for public infrastructure restoration works through the Subang Jaya City Council, the local government department, and the national landscape department.

“This brings the total cost of revitalising the Putra Heights area to RM46 million,” he said.

The fire on April 1 wrecked 81 homes at Taman Putra Harmoni and Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, with structural damage exceeding 40%.

Another 81 homes were partially damaged and 57 were affected but not burned, while 218 homes remained unaffected, including those in Kampung Tengah, Puchong.

At the press conference, Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said homes in Taman Putra Harmoni categorised as a total loss would be repaired by developer Sime Darby Bhd, while those in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru would be repaired by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd.

“For houses that need minor repairs, residents are to do these on their own, and can make claims for their expenses,” he said.

He also said the Selangor government would first channel three months’ worth of rental assistance to each affected family while their residences are being repaired or rebuilt, with the remaining sum to be distributed based on the residents’ respective needs.

The state government had earlier offered to finance rent of up to RM2,000 for each affected family for six months.

The Petronas gas pipeline fire that broke out at around 8.10am on April 1 sent flames more than 30m into the sky, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degrees Celsius.

It took nearly eight hours for the blaze to be extinguished.

Amirudin also said police had completed its investigation into the incident, with its report to be ready by next week.

“The state government will also establish an independent panel committee to evaluate the report’s findings and propose ways to reduce the chances of such incidents recurring,” he said.
