MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki says investigations involving asset declarations typically require more time.

PUTRAJAYA:
The ongoing investigation of former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is only 15% to 20% complete and will resume in two weeks, says Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki.

Azam said MACC had asked Ismail to prepare several documents needed to facilitate the investigation.

“The case is ongoing. As I mentioned before, it involves his declaration of assets.

“We have asked him to prepare certain documents. Once he does, we will call him in again, likely in about two weeks,” he said at an anti-corruption conference here today.

Azam said investigations involving asset declarations typically require more time, as the notices issued require recipients to account for the sources of their declared assets to the agency’s satisfaction.

“He has declared one part (of his assets), but what matters is verifying the declaration,” Azam said, adding that if the declaration is inaccurate or insufficient it would constitute an offence.

Last Friday, the Bera MP spent four hours at MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya on his ninth day of questioning.

Earlier this week, sources reported that the authorities had temporarily completed recording Ismail’s statement, although it remained unclear if additional sessions would follow.

Ismail submitted his asset declaration to MACC on Feb 10 and was first questioned on Feb 19.

He was subsequently summoned for questioning on March 13, 14, 17, 19, 20 and 24, and April 24.

MACC is probing the discovery of approximately RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars found in raids on the homes of four officers linked to him and three other suspected safe houses.

Separately, Azam said MACC would be hosting the 21st Asean Parties Against Corruption Principals Meeting in October.
