PETALING JAYA:
Construction of the Mutiara Line Penang LRT project is on track, the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation said today following concerns raised by an MCA leader.

The company said it has been actively driving the project forward, and that one key effort was securing approval for advance works on April 15.

It said it has also made significant progress in terms of land acquisitions, with 86 plots of land secured to date and gazetted earlier than the targeted date of October 2025.

“We would like to assure the public that the LRT Mutiara Line project remains on track and on schedule,” MRT Corp said in a statement today.

It said the main contractor for the first package of the LRT line, SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, is working on fulfilling several post-award conditions outlined in the contract. An official notice-to-proceed will be issued only after SRS fulfills these conditions.

“Another critical aspect of pre-construction work is the relocation of utilities, which must be completed before any station or viaduct-related construction activity can take place,” the company said.

MRT Corp CEO Zarif Hashim said work has been progressing at a steady pace since the groundbreaking ceremony in January.

It said major construction works would not commence immediately following a groundbreaking ceremony. “Actual on-site construction must be preceded by extensive and critical preparatory works,” he told FMT.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini quoted MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng as expressing concern over the apparent lack of physical progress in the project despite the groundbreaking in January. Tan said this undermined the government’s credibility and called for clarification.
