The pandas, Fu Wa and Feng Yi, have been on loan to Malaysia as part of the International Cooperation Project on Giant Panda Conservation.
In a statement, the natural resources and environmental sustainability ministry said Fu Wa and Feng Yi had been undergoing a quarantine process at the Giant Panda Conservation Centre (PKGP) in Zoo Negara since yesterday.
It said the quarantine is to ensure the pandas’ health is at the best level, meet permit requirements under international law and undergo training to acclimatise themselves for the flight from Malaysia to China.
“During the quarantine period, visitors will no longer be able to see Fu Wa and Feng Yi up close, but will still have the opportunity to see them from PKGP’s learning centre at selected times,” the ministry said.
Zoo Negara has also planned various programmes during the quarantine period to allow Malaysians to celebrate Fu Wa and Feng Yi. The pandas have been a big attraction at the zoo since their arrival.
The ministry also said Zoo Negara will improve the facilities and exhibits at PKGP during the pair’s absence in preparation for receiving a new pair of giant pandas in August.
It was reported on Thursday that a new agreement will pave the way for Malaysia to receive the new pair, who will be on loan for the next 10 years.
Under the previous agreement, signed on June 15, 2012, Malaysia was allowed to keep the pair of giant pandas for 10 years at Zoo Negara.
During this period, due to the excellent care provided, the pair gave birth to three giant panda cubs. They were returned to China in line with the rules under the agreement.
Nuan Nuan was born on Aug 8, 2015, Yi Yi on Jan 14, 2018 and Sheng Yi on May 30, 2021.
Nuan Nuan was sent back to China in 2017, while Yi Yi and Sheng Yi left Malaysia on Aug 29, 2023.
