TAPAH:
PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil has decided not to join the contest for the post of vice-president in next month’s party elections.

On March 16, he was reported to have stated his intention to go for the position, but now says he will only vie for a seat on the central leadership council (MPP).

Fahmi explained that this decision was made to help strengthen the party as it prepares for the 16th general election (GE16).

“We need to be stronger moving forward because the challenges ahead are significant. I’m offering myself to help streamline the party’s work at the MPP level, and when the time comes, I’ll be actively campaigning,” he said after attending the Community Day event at the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) in Ayer Kuning.

Fahmi had previously contested for one of the four vice-presidents’ posts in the 2022 party polls but failed in his attempt.

The four vice-presidents elected in 2022 were Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Aminuddin Harun, natural resources and environmental sustainability minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, as well as science, technology, and innovation minister Chang Lih Kang.

All four have announced their intention to defend their positions.

Other candidates contesting the vice-presidents’ posts are former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, Sungai Buloh PKR chief R Ramanan and PKR deputy secretary-general Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan.

Voting for the central leadership council and the heads of the women’s and youth wings will take place on May 24.
