This comes after PN Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said there was the possibility of an aide to the menteri besar being appointed to oversee development projects in opposition areas, including Ayer Kuning, even if PN wins the by-election.
In a Facebook post, Afnan said this meant that Ayer Kuning would continue to be developed regardless of whether PN or Barisan Nasional wins the seat.
Sungai Siput Umno chief Zolkafly Harun said Afnan’s statement showed that PN did not have plans for the development of Ayer Kuning and recognised the effectiveness of the state unity government.
Zolkafly, who is a Perak executive councillor, said PN should withdraw its candidate for the by-election, to be held on April 26.
“It is important for the seat to remain under BN and the state unity government so that we can continue to deliver our services and bring development to the people of Ayer Kuning.
“There’s no need for an opposition representative (in Ayer Kuning),” he told FMT.
Perak Amanah chief Asmuni Awi said votes for PN would be wasted when a government representative would be ushering in development for the constituency.
“If they say the menteri besar will appoint a special officer (to look after Ayer Kuning’s development), then what’s the point of PAS contesting?
“PAS shouldn’t waste its money and the voters’ time. The people are better off voting for the BN candidate,” said Asmuni, a former Manjoi assemblyman.
BN is fielding Tapah Umno secretary Yusri Bakir as its candidate for the by-election, while Tapah PN chief Abdul Muhaimin Malek of PAS will represent the opposition coalition.
Nominations for the by-election will be held on Saturday and early voting on April 22.
