PETALING JAYA:
A total of 2,040 road accidents and seven deaths were recorded yesterday in the first day of Op Selamat, a traffic police operation for the Aidilfitri holidays.

The seven fatal accidents involved four motorcyclists, two pedestrians, and a car driver, federal traffic police chief Yusri Hassan Basri said, according to Bernama.

More than 8,800 summonses were issued, a 16% increase over last year as police stepped up issuing summonses on the spot, aimed at raising awareness of the need to comply with traffic regulations.

Yusri said the number of accidents was 16% more than what was recorded in last year’s Op Selamat, but the number of deaths was less than the 21 cases previously.

The accidents which occurred on highways, federal and municipal roads, were due to the rise in vehicles in conjunction with Aidilfitri, he said while observing activities at the Jelapang toll plaza in Ipoh.
