Grandmother, uncle claim trial to abusing siblings

KUALA LUMPUR:
A mother and son pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to ill-treating two brothers under their custody.

The brothers, aged eight and six years, were placed under the custody of the duo, who are their grandmother and uncle, as their parents are serving jail sentences.

The mother and son were slapped with two charges each under Section 31(1)(a) of Child Act for neglecting the siblings and causing them to suffer abuses.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between January and March at a house in Taman Pusat Kepong, Sentul.

If found guilty, they face a fine up to RM50,000 or a jail sentence that can extend to 20 years, or both.

Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar granted them bail of RM7,000 in one surety each, and ordered them to report themselves to the nearest police station once a month until the conclusion of the case.

The court also ordered them not to disturb potential witnesses and the siblings.

It fixed April 24 for mention of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi appeared for the prosecution, while the mother and son were represented by lawyer Riduan Sihat.
