In a statement, DBKL said the proposal for the construction of a mosque on land owned by a private company on Jalan Masjid India had attracted attention due to a small portion which houses the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple.
DBKL said the mosque was not proposed by the government, but by the private company as the legal landowner.
It said that as the government-appointed authority tasked with administering the city, it had taken proactive steps to help reach an amicable solution for all parties involved while avoiding any racial discrimination.
DBKL said it would not carry out any demolition activities at the temple’s current site, adding that the temple could continue to operate as usual until the relocation process is complete.
“DBKL assures (the public) that every step it takes will align with the principle of religious freedom guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,” it said.
It added that the relocation process would be carried out transparently and fairly, involving discussions with stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.
DBKL expressed hope that the relevant stakeholders would cooperate to facilitate the relocation process.
“We also urge all parties to maintain harmony and respect the religious diversity in the country,” it said.
The temple, which is reportedly 130 years old, is located opposite Jakel Mall.
