PETALING JAYA:
A police officer pleaded not guilty at the Kuantan sessions court for allegedly asking a woman for a gold bangle as a bribe in exchange for not taking legal action against her in an assault case two years ago.

Khairi Aswadi Mohamad, 46, claimed trial after the charge was read to him before judge Sazlina Safie.

According to the charge sheet, Khairi allegedly requested the bribe from a 39-year-old woman at a fast-food outlet in Taman Chengal, in Temerloh, Pahang at around 2pm on April 15, 2023.

The bribe was allegedly requested as an inducement to avoid taking legal action against the woman, who was being investigated for assault.

The charge was framed under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act with a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of at least five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Defense lawyer Bob S Arumugam asked for a lower bail to be set, arguing that his client had served in the police force for 25 years.

The court fixed bail at RM8,000 and set the case for mention on May 15.
