The incident occurred at 9am when Azlan Mahmood, 56, is believed to have lost control of his three-wheeled motorcycle near a construction site in an oil palm plantation at Kampung Bukit Hangus, Utusan Malaysia reported.
According to Malaysia Jariah foundation volunteer brigade (BSYJM) director Mahadzir Abdul Hamid, Azlan fell into a drainage trench under construction.
“There were exposed steel reinforcement rods planted in the trench where concrete was to be poured, and one of the rods impaled his jaw,” Utusan Malaysia quoted him as saying.
Mahadzir said passers-by who witnessed the accident quickly came to his aid.
“The victim remained conscious and received first aid from BSYJM personnel before being rushed to Sik Hospital for emergency treatment.
“Sik fire and rescue station personnel were also called in to assist in removing the nearly one-metre-long steel rod lodged in his jaw,” he said, adding that specialised equipment was used to minimise further injury.
The victim has since been transferred to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for further treatment.
