A policeman was fined RM7,500 by the magistrates’ court here today for blackmailing a foreign teenager and her Malaysian boyfriend by threatening to spread their intimate video.

Magistrate Amalina Basirah Md Top meted out the sentence to Adib Aikal Sharul Nizam, 25, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 384 of the Penal Code for blackmailing.

Adib was initially charged alongside an accomplice, Fazrul Razzi Yunus, 31, with committing the offence near Jalan Ampang Hillview on Jan 9 last year.

According to the facts of the case, they arrested the teenager and her Malaysian boyfriend inside a car.

They demanded RM2,000 and threatened to leak their intimate video if they did not comply.

Adib then took the boyfriend to an ATM where RM300 was withdrawn for him. An additional RM200 was transferred to a bank account.

He was arrested the following day.

Adib’s lawyers, Kee Wei Lon and Ee Gen You, said he paid the fine. Deputy public prosecutors Hidayat Wahab and Analia Kamaruddin appeared for the prosecution.

Fazrul is being tried separately. In addition to the blackmail charge, he is facing other charges, including rape, unnatural sex, carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent, and sexual assault.

His first trial is scheduled to begin on April 7.
