KUALA LUMPUR:
The Cabinet has been urged to consider and approve the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) as the main regulatory body to ensure the gig economy’s sustainable growth.

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is the chairman of the high-level committee (HLC) for the establishment of SEGiM, said the commission would focus on key components of the gig economy model and areas needing regulation.

“SEGiM will play an important role in balancing the interests of platform providers, gig workers, consumers, and all stakeholders, ensuring their rights are protected through transparent policy enforcement, monitoring service standards, and empowering self-regulation in the gig industry.

“This move will also promote more sustainable, progressive and competitive industry standards to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital economy landscape,” he said in a statement after chairing the HLC meeting today.

Zahid said the establishment of SEGiM, first proposed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) under the digital ministry, was further refined during the meeting.

He also noted that MDEC had recommended that SEGiM’s legal framework be developed in collaboration with the legal affairs division of the Prime Minister’s Department, pending Cabinet approval.

“The government remains committed to strengthening the gig economy sector to ensure the well-being of gig workers and the stability of the country’s digital economy ecosystem.

“This measure not only ensures justice and social protection, but also opens up more opportunities for the people in the era of a dynamic and competitive digital economy,” he said.
