Sarawak PKR information chief Abun Sui Anyit said the decision was reached during the annual general meetings of the party’s 31 divisions in the state, which concluded on Sunday.
“All divisions in Sarawak have unanimously proposed that Anwar Ibrahim remain unchallenged for the party presidency, allowing him to secure the position unopposed and to focus fully on governing Malaysia as prime minister,” he said in a statement.
According to the PKR constitution, the upcoming term will be Anwar’s last as president if he retains the position.
Abun, the Hulu Rajang division chief, said this year’s elections are expected to be highly competitive, with many members set to contest leadership positions at both the division and national levels.
He reminded those running for positions to adhere to ethics and discipline and refrain from slander and personal attacks against fellow candidates.
Elections for the central leadership council of the national party and its women’s and youth wings will take place on May 24.
On Sunday, it was reported that Sabah’s PKR divisions had expressed support for a motion that the posts of party president and deputy president remain uncontested at the elections.
Sabah PKR chairman Mustapha Sakmud said the decision was essential to prevent internal conflicts and to ensure that the party remains strong in facing future challenges.
Twenty-four divisions have held meetings, with the exception of Beaufort which is facing floods. Division leaders proposed a motion agreeing that the two top positions remain uncontested.
PKR international bureau chairman Shamsul Iskandar Akin was previously reported as saying there was a possibility that the top two posts might not be contested in the party elections.
Anwar however said he would leave it to the party to decide whether to allow a contest for the top two posts.
