PETALING JAYA:
Umno today distanced itself from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission  investigation into its former vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party was not involved in the case, and warned against attempts to falsely associate it with the probe.

“Umno asserts its non-involvement and stands by the principle that MACC should be given the space to conduct its investigation transparently, independently, and fairly without any interference,” he said in a statement today.

“Umno will not hesitate to take legal action against any party that deliberately connects, accuses, or creates the perception that the party is involved in the case under investigation.”

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed on Monday that Ismail was a key suspect in the case. He also said the former prime minister would be called for questioning on Wednesday.

At a press conference, Azam said around RM170 million in cash and RM7 million in gold bars had been seized from a safe house.

The Bera MP, who was first summoned on Feb 19, had declared his assets as part of a probe into the spending of funds for promotional and publicity purposes during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.

According to Azam, 13 bank accounts holding around RM2 million had been frozen.

However, he said the Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia account had not been frozen as it was an active institutional account, not a personal one.

He said Ismail’s account remains under investigation.
