PETALING JAYA:
MIC deputy president M Saravanan has called for authorities to arrest Zamri Vinoth under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) after the independent preacher allegedly mocked the kavadi ritual.

In a video uploaded on social media, Saravanan said he has raised the matter with the prime minister and the home minister.

Referring to Zamri’s previous case, he said the preacher must be held accountable this time round.

“He cannot be allowed to ‘escape’ yet again due to the lack of evidence,” he said.

In 2019, Zamri was arrested for making statements deemed insulting to Hinduism.

He was investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1981. However, the Attorney-General’s Chambers decided not to charge him.

Zamri said in a Facebook post yesterday that Hindu worshippers performing the kavadi ritual looked like they were “possessed and drunk on toddy”.

His remarks followed the controversy surrounding three Era FM radio hosts, who were widely criticised for their mockery of the same religious practice.

Former deputy law and institutional reform minister Ramkarpal Singh has since called for immediate action against Zamri, saying the preacher clearly contravened laws such as Sections 504 and 505 of the Penal Code, which merited immediate investigation.

Section 504 relates to insults made with the intent of provoking a breach of the peace, while Section 505 concerns statements conducive to public mischief.

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer also called for Zamri to face the full force of the law as his remarks were intended to incite racial tension and disrupt harmony.

Saravanan also challenged Zamri to a debate on Hinduism.

“If he wants to know more about Hinduism, I am prepared to debate him,” he said.

Yesterday, Saravanan had called for action to be taken against Zamri as his “extremely disrespectful and deeply offensive remarks” went against the government’s stance on the 3Rs – race, religion and royalty.
