Logistics company charged with overloading after fatal crash that killed 7

PETALING JAYA:
A logistics company involved in the accident that took seven lives last December has claimed trial at the Alor Gajah magistrates’ court to overloading its vehicle.

Yinson Transport (M) Sdn Bhd, which was represented by operations manager Ng Chee Kiong, 36, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Teoh Shu Yee, Utusan reported.

According to the charge sheet, the company was accused of exceeding the permitted load limit by carrying 68,260kg of cement powder – 16,260kg more than the allowed 52,000kg.

The offence was said to have taken place at 8.30pm on Dec 23, 2024, at KM204 of the North-South Expressway in Alor Gajah.

The charge was framed under Section 57(3) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, which provides for a fine of RM1,000 to RM500,000, a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction.

The vehicle involved may also be forfeited under Section 80(4) of the same Act.

Deputy public prosecutor Asri Abd Rahman Sidik requested a new date for the submission of documents and asked the court to issue an arrest warrant if the accused failed to appear.

The accused was represented by lawyer Chew Jee San.

The court set April 8 for the next mention and granted the prosecution’s request.
