KUALA LUMPUR:
A 24-year-old man pleaded not guilty in the sessions court today to a charge of attempted murder outside a nightclub at Jalan Klang Lama last month.

M Devindran claimed trial to the charge before judge Egusra Ali.

He was accused of driving dangerously, in full knowledge that his actions could cause the death of members of the public in front of the Top Plus club at around 6am on Jan 29.

Two people – Mahariff Mahali, 40, and Ariff Asraff Jamaluddin, 19 – escaped with injuries on the day of the incident.

The charge was framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years.

During mitigation, lawyer T Mishant, representing Devindran, asked for a reduced bail on grounds that his client only earns RM2,000 a month as a betel leaf farmer.

He said Devindran, who is unmarried and lives with his parents, had surrendered himself to the police to facilitate the investigation.

Egusra set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered Devindran not to disturb any of the witnesses.

The next mention of the case has been set for April 16.
