Review PTPTN’s loan repayment collection mechanism, says A-G

The auditor-general says RM10.85 billion involving 1.2 million borrowers was owed to the revolving fund as of Dec 31, 2023.

The auditor-general urged PTPTN to improve the monitoring of its loan management, noting an increase in overdue education loan repayments from 2019 to 2023.
PETALING JAYA:
Auditor-General (A-G) Wan Suraya Wan Radzi has urged the Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to review its education loan repayment collection mechanism, with RM10.85 billion owed to the revolving fund as of Dec 31, 2023.

Noting that over 1.2 million borrowers owed the sum in education loan repayments, Wan Suraya also urged PTPTN to improve the monitoring of its loan management, Bernama reported.

“There was also an increase in overdue education loan repayments from 2019 to 2023,” she said after the tabling of a report on the 2023 financial statements of federal agencies in the Dewan Rakyat.

The A-G also raised concerns over the financial position of Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation, saying the agency was dependent on additional financial aid from the government to cover its operational costs and future financial commitments.

Wan Suraya also said that more than half (53.9%) of fundamental research fund projects being conducted by five universities were progressing at a less than satisfactory level.

Only 11.3% of these projects were being carried out at a “good” standard while 7.3% were deemed problematic.

The A-G said periodic monitoring was necessary to ensure that these projects were carried out according to plan and achieved the set goals.
