The education minister said the concept of high-rise schools is not new, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“Some have already been built in the federal territories, up to 10 storeys tall. So far, the tallest school in Kuala Lumpur is SMK Seri Sentosa.
“High-rise schools are not a new thing. We will have to look at this from time to time in terms of their suitability for children and their safety,” she said at a press conference in Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia in Seremban today.
It was previously reported that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had proposed building high-rise schools, comprising two blocks ranging from 10 to 17 storeys, around the city centre.
Federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa was reported to have said that the recommendation was to address the city’s limited land and rising population.
Commenting on the issue of overcrowded classes, Fadhlina said her ministry had recommended the construction of cabin classes using the industrialised building system for a number of schools, particularly in Selangor.
“These (cabins) actually provide a very conducive learning environment and can solve the problem of packed classes in the short-term,” she said.
