PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission has taken statements from eight more people suspected of uploading false and offensive content involving Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and the Conference of Rulers on Facebook.

In a statement today, MCMC said it has opened investigation papers under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with improper use of network facilities to post offensive content.

The commission said it questioned the suspects yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Pahang.

“Eight smartphones and eight SIM cards were seized to assist in investigations. Forensic analysis will be done on the devices to obtain proof for the case,” it said.

Section 233 of the CMA provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, and a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction.

It was reported on Feb 11 that MCMC was probing six people suspected of uploading false and offensive content involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Conference of Rulers.
