Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo, appearing for the family, said judicial commissioner Sumathi Murugiah allowed the stay applications filed by the government and Razak subject to payment by the government and Razak of RM4.7 million each.

The payment is to be made to the account of the family’s lawyers, Karpal Singh & Co.

The total sum of RM9.4 million includes interest accrued on the RM5 million in damages awarded in 2022.

The law firm will hold the sum pending the disposal of the appeals brought by the government and Razak to the Court of Appeal.

The court also ordered Razak to pay costs of RM25,000 awarded under the judgment in favour of the family within 30 days.

The appeals are scheduled to be heard on May 19.

In 2022, the High Court ordered the government, Razak, and former policemen Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri to pay RM5 million in damages over Altantuya’s death.

The court said Sirul and Azilah “deliberately shot” and “strapped explosives” onto Altantuya and should be held accountable for their actions.

It held that Razak was the link between the two former policemen and Altantuya.

Altantuya’s father, Shaariibuu Setev, his wife, Altantsetseg Sanjaa, and Altantuya’s son, Mungunshagai, filed the suit, claiming that there was a conspiracy surrounding her murder.

Altantuya was shot in the head in 2006 in a forest in Puncak Alam. Her body was later blown up with explosives.

Azilah and Sirul were found guilty and sentenced to death for her murder. However last year the Federal Court commuted Azilah’s death sentence and imposed a 40-year sentence on him. The apex court also ordered that he receive 12 strokes of the rotan.

Sirul is currently living in Australia following his release from detention in 2023.
