PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian exporters must take care to meet the detailed specification in recent tariffs imposed by the United States on several countries, says the ambassador to the US, Nazri Aziz.

Nazri said that the US authorities were “very detailed” and would be able to identify products that were made in China. “They (the US authorities) can trace products that are shipped to the US. They are very detailed, so be careful,” he told FMT.

The Trump administration has imposed tariffs on goods exported from Mexico, Canada and China.

Nazri said Malaysian companies must be prepared for the tariffs as it was something that US president Donald Trump had harped on since 2020.

On Thursday, investment and trade minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said there was a minimal risk in terms of a negative impact on Malaysia’s semiconductor exports to the US.

Zafrul said that Malaysia was excluded from the recent US tariff increase imposed on several countries.

Nazri said investment and trade promotion officials were in touch with the Malaysian companies to guide them on the tariffs, and the investment and trade ministry was also in touch with US firms based in Malaysia.
