Judge Noridah Adam handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty, Berita Harian reported.
The assault on the 13-year-old girl occurred at a house in Kuala Selangor.
The man was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur ‘Ayuni Jamri requested an appropriate sentence, considering the victim’s age and that the accused had betrayed her trust.
She also asked for the accused to undergo counselling and two years of police supervision after his release.
The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, appealed for a lighter sentence on the grounds that he was supporting two children who were still studying.
Noridah sentenced him to six years’ imprisonment from the date of arrest and one stroke of the rotan. He was also ordered to undergo counselling and two years of police supervision after his release.
The victim’s uncle had filed a police report on Saturday night after she told him about the incident.
Two suspects, including the girl’s 21-year-old uncle, were arrested.
