RM150mil for Setia Alam flood mitigation plan

The project will benefit more than 200,000 residents in the Setia Alam area who often fall victim to flash floods.

Selangor state executive councillor Najwan Halimi said the Shah Alam City Council has to take immediate action to mitigate the increasingly frequent floods in the area.
SHAH ALAM:
The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has allocated RM150 million to address the frequent flash floods in Setia Alam.

In a Bernama report, state youth, sports, and entrepreneurship committee chairman Najwan Halimi said the flood mitigation project would involve Sungai Binjai and Sungai Puloh.

The project is expected to benefit more than 200,000 Setia Alam residents who regularly face flash floods.

“Due to climate change, flash floods have been happening more frequently and are difficult to predict,” said the Kota Anggerik assemblyman.

“But we cannot just blame development and climate change for the floods … we need to take action,” he said after attending a public dialogue session on the Setia Alam flood mitigation plan today.

Najwan said flash floods usually occur in areas with water retention problems. They are unable to accommodate large volumes of water.

He added that MBSA is considering the construction of sustainable drainage systems and the expansion of water retention ponds.

He said this includes the preservation of green spaces and the integration of modern technology in water management.
