Cecelia Yap apologises for ‘insensitive’ remark on ham sandwich uproar

She vows to cooperate with police investigations into her remark on Facebook.

Facebook user Cecelia Yap had left a comment on a post by comedian Harith Iskander mocking the recent ham sandwich debacle.
PETALING JAYA:
A Facebook user has apologised for making an insensitive remark on the ham sandwich uproar deemed disrespectful towards Muslims.

Cecelia Yap had left the remark on a Facebook post by comedian Harith Iskander, who himself is being probed for joking that his faith was shaken after seeing a menu advertising “Ham Sap Coffee” since it contained the word “ham”.

In a statement, Yap said she would fully cooperate with police investigations into her remark, which had led to multiple reports against her.

“I hereby apologise to all parties offended by my comment, especially my Muslim friends whom I respect. I deeply regret my insensitive comment and promise not to repeat my actions in the future.

“Once again, I humbly apologise to all Malaysians over the incident. I ask that everyone offended by my comment would forgive my mistake,” she said.

A total of 16 reports have been lodged against Harith and Yap, who are accused of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad through their remarks on social media.

Their comments followed the controversy surrounding the sale of ham sandwiches allegedly lacking halal certification at a convenience store at Universiti Malaya.

Police took Harith’s statement last Wednesday and were reportedly trying to locate Yap.

The case is being probed under Sections 298 and 505 of the Penal Code for intentionally wounding the religious feelings of others and making statements with the intent of causing fear or alarm to the public.

Police are also investigating the case under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities.
