Loh’s removal as Gerakan sec-gen a routine change, says Lau

Gerakan president Dominic Lau says newly appointed secretary-general Wong Chia Zhen is better suited to convey the party's stance to other elected representatives.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Gerakan president Dominic Lau has downplayed allegations that Loh Kah Yong was sacked as secretary-general of the party, describing it as a “routine change” made in the party’s best interest.

Lau said the decision to appoint Wong Chia Zhen as the new secretary-general was based on the Kulim assemblyman’s perceived ability to demonstrate stronger commitment, especially since he is the sole Gerakan representative in the state assembly.

“I foresee significant challenges this year. Firstly, we must prepare for the Sabah state election, and secondly, if we want to win both state and general elections, we need a secretary-general who can offer better commitment on the appropriate platforms.

“The Kulim assemblyman is better suited to convey Gerakan’s stance to other elected representatives and executive councillors,” Lau told a press conference at the party’s headquarters at Menara PGRM in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was responding to questions about his decision to appoint a new secretary-general, which was announced last Wednesday during the unveiling of Gerakan’s new direction.

Loh was appointed Gerakan secretary-general on Sept 9, 2023 at the party’s elections.

Lau said Wong’s appointment is in line with Gerakan’s new narrative, which aims to empower young people.

“I need to empower the youth and provide more platforms for them. The roles of secretary-general and treasurer are presidential appointments. I cannot change the deputy president as they are elected (to the post).

“We feel Wong is more committed, suitable, and able to serve full-time,” he said.
