Malaysian cities should be recognised for their distinct character, setting them apart from major international cities, in addition to organised and systematic planning, he said in a speech at an urban planning awards ceremony.
Anwar said urban planning should also consider green environments and public comfort.
“We must make Malaysia’s cities unique and distinct. I urge you (urban planners) to pay closer attention, so that we can be proud of holistic development. This is a challenge for you, especially now that urban planning and management are increasingly relying on digital tools and artificial intelligence.
“Also, ensure no city perpetuates the divide between the successful, wealthy individuals and ordinary citizens,” he said.
Anwar also congratulated Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg who was made an honorary fellow of the Malaysian Planning Association.
Describing Abang Johari as a visionary leader in the development of Sarawak, Anwar said: “Abang Jo is a leader who has proven that with political stability, focussed leadership on state development, and the willingness to explore new ideas and policies, progress is possible. He doesn’t remain trapped in old ways but always seeks new paths.”
