Astro said the High Court in Kuala Lumpur had decided on Jan 7 in favour of Measat after Frenz Pool Café and Tuwang 69 Sdn Bhd were found guilty of illegally streaming the broadcaster’s English Premier League (EPL) match.
“The case focussed on the unauthorised public screening of an EPL match between Manchester United and Brighton on Sept 16, 2023, aired via Astro Supersport 3,” it said in a statement.
Astro also said the infringement included the unauthorised use of its logos and branding elements.
In addition to the damages, the court issued a permanent injunction against the defendants, barring them from further unauthorised streaming of Astro’s copyrighted content.
The defendants were also ordered to pay RM10,000 in legal costs, Astro said.
In November last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Brew Nation Sdn Bhd to pay Measat RM75,000 in statutory damages and RM5,000 in legal costs to Astro for unauthorised streaming of the broadcaster’s premium content.
This was the company’s first-ever statutory damages award in a copyright infringement case.
Brew Nation’s pub in Bandar Rimbayu, Selangor, had streamed live sports content, including football matches, on Aug 12, 2023, in the hope of attracting more customers.
Astro previously reached a RM15,000 settlement in another copyright infringement case involving Yap Kim Hon, who sold illegal streaming devices under his company, YKH Digital Enterprise.
On Aug 19, 2024, nasi kandar chain Thaqwa (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd agreed to pay RM221,773 to Measat for illegally broadcasting Astro content.
