PETALING JAYA:
Popular Malaysian soy sauce maker Hup Teck will be closing business after 111 years on Jan 28.

In a Facebook post, the company said it was a difficult decision to make.

“It is with humble gratitude and a heavy heart that we announce the closing of our Hup Teck soy sauce factory.

“We are grateful for your continued support and loyalty. You are all the direct reason for our success,” it said.

The business encouraged customers to visit its factory in Gopeng, Perak, in these last weeks and purchase its remaining stock.

According to a report in Sin Chew, the soy sauce factory is shuttering as its owner, Low Bak Tong, has no one to continue the business after his retirement.

The 72-year-old said only his sister and nephew were currently helping him run the business, which makes soy sauce in hundreds of large earthen urns in a garden using the traditional method of fermentation.

“As times have changed, many old industries have disappeared.

“There used to be four soy sauce factories in Gopeng. Now, the only remaining soy sauce factory will say goodbye to everyone,” said Low.
