Its information chief, Suhaimi Nasir, said the central leadership has neither directed nor interfered in such matters, particularly in choosing coalition partners.
Suhaimi said the Umno Supreme Council only advised Sabah Umno to strengthen ties between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan for political stability, as both coalitions are part of the federal government.
“This advice stems from lessons learned during the previous term, where the nation endured three changes in prime ministers and governments, causing significant harm to the people and the country,” he said in a statement today.
Suhaimi was addressing media reports claiming that Sabah Umno is acting on directives from the party’s headquarters in deciding its alliances for the upcoming state election.
He said the guidance from the central leadership reflects Umno’s role as a national party, which must maintain the peace and avoid conflicts between Sabah and Putrajaya.
“Ultimately, however, the decision-making authority lies solely with Sabah Umno,” he said, adding that this autonomy demonstrates Umno’s respect for the rights and voices of the state’s people.
