PUTRAJAYA:
PAS would defend any Malaysian who faced oppression or the curtailing of their rights, even DAP leaders Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang, Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said today.

Fadhli, the PAS information chief, said PAS had always been a party that stood for the oppressed, including Anwar Ibrahim when he was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998.

“All the more then would we defend Najib Razak, as a former prime minister who has contributed immensely to the country. It is very apt that we stand in solidarity with him.

“When Anwar was sacked from the government, we were with him, too,” Fadhli told reporters outside the Palace of Justice here.

Over 3,000 people had earlier gathered outside the Palace of Justice in a show of solidarity with Najib. The crowd, including supporters from PAS, Bersatu, Umno, and NGOs, arrived by 6.30am, displaying banners with messages like “#Justice4Najib” and “#BebasNajib”.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, and PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar were among the opposition politicians spotted inside the court complex. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh also showed up for the rally.

The Court of Appeal is hearing Najib’s application for leave to adduce fresh evidence in his appeal to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest.
