The statement was issued following China’s decision to temporarily halt the import of bird’s nest products from Malaysia following reports of a spread of the disease among chickens and ducks here.

The department said the suspension has led to 1.76 metric tonnes of bird’s nest consignments, worth an estimated RM7.23 million, exported by 13 firms having clearance issues in China.

“The department has held discussions with producers and exporters to give them the latest information and discuss a resolution to the temporary suspension.

“A detailed report on the status of the disease here, including actions to mitigate its spread, has been sent to China’s customs department, with an assurance that products sent to China are free of the Newcastle disease,” it said in the statement.

It added that it was in the midst of updating its protocols for the export of bird’s nest products to China.

“The department is committed to ensuring compliance with international export standards while preserving the interests of Malaysian producers and exporters.”
