PETALING JAYA:
Former deputy law and institutional minister Ramkarpal Singh has been appointed the defence lawyer for the National Defence University (UPNM) student accused of assaulting a junior with a hot iron.

The announcement was made during today’s mention of the case at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Judge Egusra Ali set Feb 4 for next mention after deputy public prosecutor Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal requested a new date to submit additional documents to the defence.

“Some of the documents have already been handed over to the defence. The prosecution has requested the court to set a new date for the submission of the remaining documents,” Nadia was quoted as saying.

Ramkarpal did not object to the prosecution’s request.

On Nov 8, Amirul Iskandar Nohanizan, 22, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Salman Saiful Surash, 20, by placing a hot iron on his chest at the UPNM hostel on Oct 22.

He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine, and could also be whipped, if convicted.
