PETALING JAYA:
The customs department foiled an attempt to smuggle 81.34kg of methamphetamine worth RM2.6 million from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on Dec 17.

Customs central zone assistant director-general Norlela Ismail said the drugs were hidden in four parcels declared as stationery, intended for delivery by air freight.

A scanner detected suspicious objects in the parcels at KLIA’s air cargo terminal at 10.15am that day, Bernama quoted her as saying in a statement.

“Upon checking, the operations team found 80 transparent plastic packages containing crystal substances suspected to be methamphetamine.

“The delivery slip for these parcels was addressed to a fake identity,” she said in a press conference today.

Norlela said the sender’s address was confirmed to be false through checks with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, which revealed that the company listed on the parcels was non-existent.

She said CCTV footage showed a man, who had used a rented car, delivering the parcels to the hub.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking in dangerous drugs.
