GEORGE TOWN:
Penang is offering a full waiver of penalties for late payment of quit rent if property owners pay their arrears by Feb 28, 2025.

The state is also offering a 50% discount on penalties for those who pay their arrears between March 1 and May 31.

Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said this is aimed at easing land and parcel quit rent burdens for property owners, while allowing the state to recover some RM40 million in overdue payments.

He revealed there were RM40.1 million in unpaid penalties, involving 107,908 accounts. If the taxes remain unpaid, property owners risk losing their land.

Late payments were recorded for 40,371 quit rent accounts and 67,537 parcel quit rent accounts. They were slapped with penalties, Chow said.

Chow added that the waiver and discount are only for lump-sum payments. They do not apply to those paying their dues through instalment plans or those who have already settled their overdue penalties.

This offer is available to all land owners, and apartment and condominium owners (paying parcel quite rent), including those who have received penalty notices.

Payments can be made at district land offices or online through the PgLAND web portal. For more details, affected land and parcel owners can contact the Penang land and mines office or their district land offices.
