PETALING JAYA:
The road transport department (JPJ) will impound and revoke the rights of commercial vehicles that fail to comply with the rules under the Land Public Transport Act 2010 through its nationwide “Gempur Teknikal” operation launched on Dec 25.

Its director-general, Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the owner of the company or vehicle would be prosecuted under Section 57 of Act 715 for failing to give priority to other road users.

“If convicted, the owner may be fined not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM500,000 under the same section.

“The vehicle involved can also be confiscated under Section 80 of Act 715,” Bernama quoted him as saying in a statement today.

Aedy said the special operation focused on the enforcement of offences such as those involving overloading, documentation, vehicle manufacturing, and designated use.

“JPJ takes the accidents involving commercial vehicles resulting in the deaths of other road users seriously,” he said.

On Dec 23, seven people were killed and 33 injured in an accident involving a tour bus, two lorries and two cars at Km204 of the North-South Expressway heading north in Melaka.

It was reported that a tyre that became detached from a lorry caused the tour bus to lose control, swerve into the opposite lane and collided with a trailer lorry and two cars.
