PETALING JAYA:
The driver of a Mercedes Benz that caught fire at the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway’s Wangsa Maju toll plaza has been charged over a hit-and-run incident that left a motorcyclist seriously injured.

Sum Kah Fei, 34, claimed trial after he was charged with reckless driving before magistrate Haneefa Ariffin at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court, Sinar Harian reported.

Sum is accused of recklessly driving his car, causing a collision with a motorcycle and seriously injuring Nur’faiz Saini @ Ausaini, 34, at about 12.35pm on Dec 15.

The charge was framed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act, which provides for a maximum five years’ jail, a fine of up to RM15,000, and a two-year disqualification from driving.

He also pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to stop his vehicle following the accident. The charge under Section 52(1) of the same act allows for a maximum RM2,000 fine or up to six months in prison for first-time offenders.

Deputy public prosecutor Amir Hannif Ahijman suggested that the court fix bail at RM12,000, but lawyer Quek Kia Ping pleaded for a lower amount, saying his client had a wife and child to care for.

Haneefa fixed bail at RM6,000 and set Feb 24 for case mention.
