PETALING JAYA:
Police are investigating an incident in which a referee was attacked and punched by several players during a football match in Puchong Jaya, Selangor, last Sunday.

Serdang police chief AA Anbalagan said an investigation was launched after a video of the incident went viral on social media, Sinar Harian reported.

He said the 38-year-old referee had lodged a police report.

“The victim was punched by someone known to him, who was dissatisfied with the penalty kick being awarded to the opposing team,” Anbalagan said.

He said the incident is being investigated under Section 160 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to six months’ jail, a fine of up to RM1,000, or both upon conviction.

Anbalagan also advised the public not to speculate about the incident.
