Najib Razak may want convicted ex-Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng to testify in his defence to charges of abuse of power and money laundering in his ongoing 1MDB trial.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Lawyers for Najib Razak told the High Court today that they are considering calling convicted former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng to testify for the defence in the ex-prime minister’s 1MDB trial.

Shafee Abdullah informed Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah that a letter had been extended to Bukit Aman, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and the Attorney-General’s Chambers for this purpose.

“He is a potential witness,” said Shafee.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib said he was notified of the matter earlier today.

“I will be attending a meeting on this next week,” he said.

Ng was sentenced by a New York court to 10 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of corruption in March last year.

He was repatriated to Malaysia in October 2023 to assist local authorities in the recovery of 1MDB assets.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said Ng was still in custody as the police looked to secure more information from him.

Najib is on trial for 25 charges of power abuse and money laundering over alleged 1MDB funds remitted to his bank account.

Don’t stray into sub-judice matters again, judge warns

Separately, Sequerah reminded both prosecutors and defence lawyers not to “stray into sub-judice matters”.

“Let the battle be confined in the courtroom,” the judge said.

Sequerah’s comments came after Akram informed the court that the defence intended to hold another press conference today on the case.

Shafee asked why the prosecution had raised the matter, noting that former attorney-general Tommy Thomas recently spoke about the case during an interview.

Akram said he was unaware of the interview.

“Counsel (Shafee) also spoke about this case at a forum (previously),” he added.

Shafee said he had not commented about the case, merely read the notes of proceedings.

Sequerah told both sides not to prolong the dispute.

The hearing continues on Jan 6, 2025.
