KUALA LUMPUR:
A former employee of a fast-food restaurant has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to stealing a car and attempting to kill a man who was clinging on to the vehicle’s bonnet.

Sessions court judge Izralizam Sanusi sentenced Wan Azhar Azman, 20, to 10 years’ jail for attempted murder and four years for car theft, with both sentences to be served concurrently from the date of arrest on Oct 24.

According to the facts of the case, D Joshua Jeyaseelan rented out his car, a Honda Civic, to Wan Azhar’s girlfriend on Oct 22 and she was supposed to return it the next day. When she failed to return the car, he contacted her several times but there was no response.

Using a GPS tracker, Joshua and a business partner, Jalil Iskandar, found the car being driven by the accused at the Precinct 14 roundabout in Putrajaya, with the woman in it. The car also had different number plates.

When Jalil told Azhar to stop the car, he attempted to knock him down, causing him to jump on its bonnet to avoid being hit, before he was thrown onto the road. He suffered serious injuries.

Before handing down the sentence, Izralizam advised Azhar to repent and not to repeat his mistakes after completing his jail term.

“The offence you committed is serious, which is attempted murder, with the victim suffering very serious injuries as he was admitted to the intensive care unit.

“If (the victim) had died, you could have been accused of murder, but since he did not die, you were charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he said.

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Zanyuin appeared for the prosecution while Wan Azhar was not represented.
