Penang Island parking rates to rise by 50% in March

Mayor Rajendran Anthony says the hike aims to fund the maintenance of smart parking sensors and upgrades to the Penang Smart Parking system.

GEORGE TOWN:
Parking rates on Penang Island will increase by 50% starting next March, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) announced today.

Mayor Rajendran Anthony said the new rates would help maintain the smart parking sensors, which provide real-time updates on available spaces via Penang Smart Parking, and cover system upgrades.

Under the revised rate, fees will rise from 40 sen to 60 sen for 30 minutes, 80 sen to RM1.20 per hour, and RM6 to RM9 for a full day.

Currently, parking costs 80 sen per hour on the island from Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 6pm, and 40 sen per hour in Seberang Perai.

“The last increase was in 2014, when 30-minute rates were raised from 30 sen to 40 sen. Before that, rates hadn’t changed since the 1990s,” Rajendran told FMT.

He said the council approved the new rates in a council meeting today and it would affect all 19,000 parking lots on the island.

For annual parking passes, Rajendran said the rate would drop from RM1,800 to RM1,200 starting March 1, while monthly passes would remain at RM150.
