PETALING JAYA:
Federal territories PKR Youth wing has slammed Barisan Nasional’s intention to contest five parliamentary seats in the next general election, calling it unrealistic given Pakatan Harapan’s dominance there.

The wing’s information chief, Azha Salahuddin, reaffirmed its commitment to ensure PKR and PH defend the 10 parliamentary seats (out of the 13) they won in the 2022 general election (GE15).

“The five seats held by PKR and five by DAP were won with substantial majorities, highlighting the trust and confidence federal territory residents have in PH representatives, who are regarded as effective advocates for their concerns in Parliament,” he said in a statement today.

“Thus, the declaration to contest five parliamentary seats in the next election appears not only impossible but also unrealistic.”

Azha also questioned whether BN’s declaration was an attempt at destabilising the unity government within the federal territories.

On Sunday, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope that the coalition can expand its presence in the federal territories by contesting five parliamentary seats at the next general election.

He said BN would engage in discussions with its partners in the unity government, with the goal of making the federal territories a stronghold of the unity alliance.

The sole seat won by BN in the federal territories during GE15 was Titiwangsa, represented by plantation and commodities minister Johari Ghani.

In response, Azha urged BN to prioritise public welfare and work on strengthening harmony within the unity government instead of playing political games.

“Focus should be on addressing the needs of residents in the federal territories, especially in the capital (Kuala Lumpur),” he added.
