Deputy human resources minister Abdul Rahman Mohamad said the Cabinet had agreed in principle in March to the proposed implementation of the Skim Kemalangan Bukan Berpunca dari Pekerjaan (SKBBK).
He said the proposal paper to amend the act was being prepared for presentation to the Cabinet.
“It is anticipated that the amendment may not be tabled in Parliament in the current session, but will likely be presented during the next one,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to M Saravanan (BN-Tapah) who asked about coverage for workers who suffer illnesses after the retirement age of 60.
Last Thursday, Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) questioned the progress of the proposed SKBKK.
FMT reported on Nov 15 that Socso was facing increased scrutiny over the delayed implementation of the scheme, which is designed to cover injuries sustained by workers outside their employment.
Sources told FMT that the scheme, touted as a milestone achievement in the country’s social security system, was approved by the Cabinet in March this year.
However, Socso has yet to enact the scheme, leaving thousands of injured workers unprotected in 2024.
The delayed implementation sparked frustration among social security advocates, particularly as 3,098 workers who reportedly suffered injuries this year did not qualify for compensation under Socso’s employment injury scheme.
