PETALING JAYA:
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has announced the appointment of Denmark’s Kenneth Jonassen as the new national singles coach.

Jonassen, 50, will begin his four-year contract on Jan 4 next year, according to a posting by BAM on X.

“As part of his role, Jonassen will collaborate closely with Rexy Mainaky to devise a long-term development plan for Malaysia’s singles programme,” it said.

Jonassen has had a distinguished coaching career that includes 13 years shaping Denmark’s badminton programme and serving as the head coach for England.

As a former World No. 2 in men’s singles, he won titles including the German, Korean, Dutch, and Singapore Opens during his playing career.

Jonassen once guided Viktor Axelsen to his first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in 2021 and also helped the Dane win the 2017 world title.

BAM previously announced a restructuring of its coaching lineup, including not continuing the service of men’s singles coach Hendrawan, who had been with BAM since 2009, effective Oct 31.

It is understood that the positions of head coach for women’s singles and women’s doubles are still vacant.
