Parliamentary Services Act postponed to next year, says Wong Chen

The Subang MP says the delay, announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday, may be linked to civil servant pay structure adjustments.

KUALA LUMPUR:
The Parliamentary Services Act (PSA), originally slated for tabling last month, has been postponed until next year, says Subang MP Wong Chen.

Wong, an advocate for reintroducing the PSA, said he was present when Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim briefly announced the delay in Parliament yesterday.

While Anwar did not elaborate on the reasons for the postponement, Wong said it could be tied to administrative issues, particularly regarding pay and pensions.

“I think the delay is mostly to do with the transition from being part of the civil service to an independent parliamentary service. The current Parliament-based officers will probably want better or equivalent pay and pensions,” he told FMT, while expressing his disappointment over the delay.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul previously announced that the PSA would be tabled during the current meeting, adding that the “Blue Bill” was prepared and ready for tabling.

Calls to revive the law had been made for a few years among MPs as well as by former Senate president Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The PSA was first enacted in 1963, granting Parliament independence in managing its affairs, staff selection, and expenditure control. However, it was repealed in 1992.
