P Kuhan Raj, 31, a mobile phone shop owner, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out before magistrate Haneefa Ariffin, Berita Harian reported.
The charge was framed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 and imprisonment of five to 10 years upon conviction.
According to the charge sheet, Kuhan is accused of driving a BMW at high speed and colliding with a motorcycle, killing pillion rider Nur Naura Nathifa El-Khuwailid, 7.
The incident took place on the Bukit Jalil-Puchong Highway at about 9.50pm on Nov 15.
Deputy public prosecutor Salsabila Mohammad proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety.
However, the accused’s lawyer, Inderpal Singh, appealed for a lower bail amount, citing that his client is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Magistrate Haneefa set bail at RM12,000 and ordered the accused’s driving licence be suspended immediately until the case is resolved.
The court set Jan 21 next year for the next case mention.
A 28-second video of the incident from a car’s dashboard camera had gone viral on Facebook, with a caption claiming that the suspect’s car stopped before driving off.
