The suspect is said to have sold the content on X, amassing more than 100,000 followers and earning up to RM3,000 a month.

According to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the student had uploaded and sold explicit videos featuring himself with women he knew.
PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is investigating a student at a public university over the sale of explicit content on social media.

MCMC said it recorded a statement by the suspect and his partner – a student at a private varsity – recently to assist in its probe. Their ages were not disclosed.

In a statement, it said the suspect’s activities began in 2021, with him reuploading existing explicit content shared by other users on X.

“The suspect then shifted to uploading and selling explicit videos featuring himself with women he knew,” it said.

He is said to have gained more than 100,000 followers on the platform while earning up to RM3,000 a month from selling the videos at RM150 each.

MCMC said the sale of explicit videos is an offence under Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable by a year in prison, a maximum fine of RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

It confiscated a phone and SIM card belonging to the suspect to assist in the investigation.

The commission urged the public to report the sale and distribution of explicit content on social media platforms to allow enforcement action to be taken.
