PETALING JAYA:
A 40-year-old Malaysian man has been sentenced to four months in jail in Brunei for committing criminal trespass and threatening a guard with a parang.

Magistrate Syaffina Shahif meted out the sentence after Jonathon Layang Mambang @ Hazafiq Abdullah pleaded guilty to the charges, Borneo Bulletin reported.

The facts of the case show that Jonathon and three others trespassed into the compound of a building at Jalan Kilanas Mulaut, Kampong Kilanas on Nov 2, thinking that it was abandoned.

Deputy public prosecutor Abdul Musawwir Haji Mahli said the four had ventured into the premises to scavenge for goods.

He added that at 4.30am, a guard confronted the four men at the site and was threatened by Jonathon who took out the parang, before they fled the scene.

The owner of the property, who was notified of the incident, then managed to stop one of the four trespassers, who identified the Malaysian and this led to his arrest.

Jonathon reportedly has a criminal record in Brunei.
